Rebecca May John was born September 11, 1957. When she was one years old her parents placed her in the custody of the State of Oklahoma. She lived the early part of her life in an institution in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. In 1983m at the age of twenty-six she came to Tahlequah, Oklahoma to live at Oklahoma Production Center (OPC). Becky as she was affectionately called, loved OPC. There she was able to engage in many activities and form many friendships. Among the jobs Becky had were working on the Janitorial Crew (which didn’t last long due to her habit of collecting ink pens), working at Recycle and shredding papers in various offices at OPC.
Becky loved going shopping, going out to eat and dancing. Becky loved to dance! She was proud of her Native American heritage. She loved going to Pow Wow’s. Becky enjoyed all holidays except the Fourth of July, because of the loud noises the firecrackers made. She enjoyed playing baseball and fishing at the annual picnics that OPC had for a number of years. Becky loved to fish and had the trophies to prove it.
Becky never met a stranger at OPC, but her best friend was Amy. They were roommates at OPC most of the time. It was only when the structure had changed that they were no longer together. Becky had a dew male friends as well, but her favorite was Gordon Brown. Gordon lived at Gateway in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gordon’s brother and sister-in-law would take Becky to Tulsa for the parties at Gordon’s group home. Becky and Gordon would also have coffee dates when he visited Tahlequah.
As Becky grew older, she developed Alzheimer’s and her participation in activities began to decline. She didn’t always recognize her guardian and she didn’t like doing activities she once enjoyed. On December 23, 2020 Becky passed away.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her guardian, Becky Baughman and a large number of friends. She loved many people and she was loved by many.
