Obituary for Joyce Earline Gay
Joyce
Earline Gay was born March 11, 1936 to parents (Buster) Golden Frank
and Lena Rose Hodge Brandon in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. She departed this
life on June 29, 2019 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the age of 83 years 3
months and 19 days.
Joyce grew up in and graduated from Banning High School in Wilmington, CA in the year 1954. She married her lifelong friend and sweetheart George Edd Gay at the Hitchin’ Post Chapel in Las Vegas on August 28th, 1954. Joyce enrolled in college but was unable to attend as she soon found out her career was to be a mother to her children, as well as, the mother to many other children in the family. She and George opened up their home providing family members with a place to live, meals to eat, cars and transportation, and she was always available to babysit. Joyce always had a warm lap to be rocked to sleep and could often be found down in the floor playing with the kids. Through the years Joyce’s husband was gone out of town working leaving her to raise their children. Joyce was an A+ homemaker, her home was always immaculately clean, and she had a green thumb that was hard to beat. She could make a big meal out of seemingly nothing and have it on the table every night by 6pm. Sometimes she made special dishes for the grand children like yellow cakes, homemade rolls, or her famous pineapple upside down cake. She loved to laugh, to tell stories, and to play practical jokes, she once made a special dish for her granddaughter called “dirty sock soup.” She taught her children morals, values and responsibility and sometimes that came at a price on our backside. She is loved and highly respected by her children and grandchildren as they realize they are who they are today because of her strength.
Joyce was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband George Edd Gay and her brother Golden Frank Brandon. Jr.
Joyce is survived by a loving family which includes her children Jorja Calico and husband Jay of Tahlequah, Richmond Gay and wife Linda of Tahlequah, her sister Becky Hawks of Tahlequah, and 5 grandchildren: K. Aaron Grant of Fayetteville, AR, Ashley Grant of Tahlequah, Christopher Gay, Jason Gay and Mark Gay of Tahlequah. As well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of family and friends.
