Obituary for Dwight Lee Cone

The Life of Dwight Cone

It all began on September 24, 1952 in Broken Arrow, OK. The first-born to Floyd and Nora Jean Cone, Dwight was doted on. His mother described in a letter to her mother how cute he looked in a new pair of overalls that the Grandmother had bought him and explained he was getting over his cold. His brother, Larry would come along a year later and the two boys had a perfect early childhood. Living near Inola, they frequently crawled through the fence and Dwight, holding little brothers hand, would walk across the pasture to eat cinnamon toast at Grandma’s house. They loved to hitch a ride on neighbor Moses Tillis’ horse drawn wagon for the 2 mile ride to Fugatt’s store.
When Dwight was 7, the family moved to Wagoner. He attended Ellington Elementary. Walter Sleeper was a neighbor that greatly influenced Dwight’s life by allowing him to ride his horses. He became an excellent horseman, competing in rodeos and county fair events.
When he was a teenager Dwight gained new stepfamilies. His father married Gladys Detrick, and her son Mike became part of the family. Three years later his mother married Tom Carlile. With this marriage, he gained 3 siblings, Parva, Mary Joyce and Steve. In 1971, he graduated from Wagoner High School and the new expanded family moved to Park Hill where Dwight would have land for his beloved horse, Blue. Dwight and Blue traveled around the area to team roping competitions and they were very successful.
Dwight graduated from Bill Willis Skills Center’s Heavy Equipment Program in 1985 and worked at Oklahoma Highway Department, American Foundry, Patton Construction, Jim Hinds Waste Management, City of Tulsa and Becco Construction. He was a hard worker, always on time and willing to take extra hours. His friends at work called him Dudley.
When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed visiting his family, and an occasional visit to the casino. He made good friends with the restaurant and convenience store employees that he visited daily. He loved talking and joking, especially with his nephews and nieces. He struggled with dyslexia and learned to conquer the disability by having an excellent memory and not being afraid to ask questions and get help when he needed it. Preceding him in death were his father Floyd Cone; mother, Jean Carlile; aunts Johnnie Smith and Nelda Lucas; uncles Bob Cone and Glenn Cone. He is survived by Brother Larry and wife Vickie of Park Hill; Father, Tom Carlile of Park Hill; Aunt Barbara Lorene Thompson and husband Bud of Tulsa; Sister Parva and husband Frank of Seneca, MO; Sister Mary and husband Steve Tinker of Jenks and Brother Steve Carlile of Charleston, SC. He leaves behind 2 nieces, Sharla and husband Kevin Burgess of Bixby; Karmen and husband Corey Brown of Wagoner and 2 nephews Mike and wife Aubrey Bradley and Sam Bradley of Seneca, MO.
