Eugene R. Martin was born in Gans, Oklahoma on October 17, 1922 to John Millis and Charity (Hodge) Martin. He passed peacefully in his sleep on January 4, 2021 at the age of 98 years 2 months and 18 days at the Cherokee County Nursing Center in Tahlequah where he was cared for by loving and caring staff since August of 2020.
Before moving to Tahlequah Eugene lived in Miami, Oklahoma and worked as a produce manager in grocery stores. He eventually owned and operated his own convenience stores. Eugene resided alone and independently for several years in Tahlequah
Eugene enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in April of 1945. He lived in California during this time. Eugene was in the infantry and was a machine gunner and fought in the Phillipines.
Eugene prided himself on working hard to raise a family of five children with his second wife, Bette, but later realized he wished he would have spent more time with family and less time working.
He loved to watch the OU football team and loved growing a garden every year. He definitely had a green thumb and loved gardening vegetables and beautiful flowers. He also loved feeding the birds and then sitting back and watching them for hours on end. He read his Bible every morning and had actually read the Bible from cover to cover many times throughout the years. Eugene was baptized at Tahlequah Church of Christ on December 13, 2008.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Charity (Hodge) Martin; his ten siblings; his first wife, Helen; two grandsons, Chet Marquis and Jeremy Berry.
He is survived by his daughters, Pam Parks and husband Lawrence of Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Wanda Marquis, of Springfield, Missouri; three sons, Russell J. Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jack M. Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Raymond E. Martin and spouse Stacie of Melbourne, Florida; nine grandchildren, Ben, Adrienne, Stacey, Christie, Lindsey, Russell, Kaitlyn, Maxx, and Sabrina; 15 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and a host of many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
